Signs and Symptoms of Depression

It is a guarantee that everyone, at some point in their life, is going to feel down and depressed about something. They may even feel depressed for a few days out of the month. A clinical diagnosis of depression, however, is only given when certain criteria are met. Unlike with many illnesses, there are no current diagnostic tests that can be done to prove whether one has depression or not. A blood sample may rule out other possible conditions that could be causing a depression-like state, but it will not properly diagnose clinical depression.

Knowing What to Watch For

If you know what to watch for, you will be in better shape to catch clinical depression before it can become a huge deficit to your life. The first thing to know is the medical history of your family. Depression, much like other illnesses, tends to be prevalent in some families and can be passed down from generation to generation. Knowing that your grandfather or mother had depression does not necessarily mean that you will have the condition also, but it can allow you to be aware that the possibility exists so that you can keep a close watch out for any signs of depression.

Major Signs of Depression

While there is no one diagnostic test that can prove whether or not you have depression, there are a number of signs and symptoms that can point in that direction.

  • Sleep - Depression can cause many people to find that they either cannot sleep well, also called insomnia, or that they have hypersomnia and are sleeping more than they need to throughout the day.
  • Desolate - Those with depression have a desolate feeling about the future. They believe that there is no hope for the future and that there is nothing that can be done to make things better than they are now.
  • Change in Interest - Depression can cause a person who used to enjoy something like scrapbooking to be apathetic about it. They may lose all interest in hobbies, activities, and even sex.
  • Fatigue - Similar to the sleep changes, a common sign of depression is an overwhelming feeling of fatigue. Someone who is depressed feels as though even the smallest task is a daunting affair.
  • Weight - Weight loss and gain can both occur in someone who is clinically depressed. Any change of more than 5% body weight in 30 days or less when you are not trying to change your body size should be considered suspect.
  • Concentration - Decision making and focusing on tasks can be very difficult for someone who is clinically depressed, causing many people to make a series of poor decisions.
  • Physical Pain - The condition of depression often manifests itself in physical symptoms, such as headaches, abdominal pain, and aching body parts.
  • Suicidal Thoughts - Severe depression can bring along feelings of self-loathing and thoughts of suicide. Suicidal thoughts should always be taken seriously and a physician or other professional should be contacted immediately when these thoughts occur.

When to Seek Help

Any time you or someone you love is experiencing some of the above symptoms, it is important to be evaluated by a professional. There are a number of medical conditions that can cause depression-like symptoms, which is why it is important to be examined thoroughly by a medical professional if you have any of the symptoms that have been illustrated in this article.
