Explain the different types of depression and how they are treated
The diagnosis for depression has been steadily increasing over the last ten years, and it seems as though there is nothing that can be done currently to stop the condition from becoming a dangerous one for thousands of people every year. Many people do not realize, however, that there is not just one type of depression, but many types, and all of these types can cause different symptoms and can be treated differently.
Different Types
Some wonder why there are so many different types of depression. The variety in depression types results from the variety in depression causes. Depression is caused by the imbalance of certain chemicals in the brain. Different chemical balances can cause different types of depression, and one medication does not solve every type of depression, which is why it is vital for a physician to take a full history and to do a full inventory of all of the symptoms in order to discover which type of depression you are suffering from.
The Types
- Postpartum Depression - Some studies have shown that more than 75% of mothers get what is often referred to as the "baby blues," where the new mother finds herself down and unable to get happy easily. Postpartum depression is what occurs when the baby blues continue on and becomes much more serious and occurs in around 10% of the women who suffer from the baby blues. Postpartum depression tends to have a lot of highs and lows, with a mother finding herself frequently crying or extremely irritable. She may also suffer from extreme fatigue. Treatment for postpartum depression includes getting social support, therapy, and may include mild antidepressants, dependant on whether the mother is breastfeeding her child.
- Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) - A person who suffers from SAD will begin to feel sadness, irritability, and a lack of concentration usually when the autumn begins. It is estimated that 4% - 6% of Americans suffer from SAD, and while there is a condition known as Summer SAD, most SAD patients get depressed during the winter months. Light therapy is one of the most effective treatments for Winter SAD, and some physicians will prescribe antidepressants as well.
- Major Depression - One of the most common types of depression to be diagnosed is Major Depression. Those who suffer from major depression often feel a profound feeling of hopelessness and despair. They have a difficult time working and enjoying the things that they once used to love. The most common treatment for major depression is antidepressant medication and psychotherapy.
Depression is a leading cause of suicide and needs to be taken seriously. Depression can is a significant illness, and only a physician can diagnose if you have depression or which type of depression you may have. If you feel as though you have some of the symptoms of depression, or if you, or someone you know, has been having suicidal thoughts, it is important to contact a professional immediately.
